I just ran across this post from The Inspiration Room. It reminded me of a few brief weeks of spring 2011 that I failed to blog about amidst some heavy deadlines and a monster approval process. As I'm currently wishing for an early arrival of spring 2012, why not reminisce!

The coolest image spot to come out of HBO in quite some time is all credited to EP Dan Zibulsky and his uber-fabulous editor, Akiko. What a smash they created with "Here We Come" - killer editing and catchy music by The Willows.

But when your spot is too cool and cutting edge, *sigh*, you make an alternative. This is where I come in. We were tasked with creating a second image piece - an emotional sell - to air in the much-anticipated Game of Thrones premiere break. I sat with Dan for 2 weeks to screen 8 series, 3 films, 3 specials and 2 documentaries, drum up some new music and write copy for what we deemed the "Moments" image piece. It was our promotional safety net in a crunch.

2011 was one for the books!

I got ENGAGED in Hawaii last September in Hawaii and MARRIED in New York this August. My husband and I honeymooned in the Maldives, the most gorgeous islands on the planet. This archipelago is also notable as the smallest of all Asian countries with the lowest elevation on earth. (I'm fairly certain my dream vacation will be an underwater Atlantis by the time I have children.)
I won my first Telly Award and brought home new Mark Awards after toiling away on some of our biggest HBO campaigns. Mildred Pierce, you are the gift that keeps on giving.
I was asked to be the Godmother to the most precious little girl in all of Texas - my brand new niece, Emma Grace.
Michael Stuhlbarg, arguably the most intelligent and well-spoken of all HBO's actors, complimented my interview skills during a Boardwalk Empire shoot this fall. It was a highlight I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit.
I upgraded to the iPhone 4S and transitioned from Hotmail to MobileMe. (This is life changing. Believe it.)
I pitched design companies for the network redesign of HBO and assisted in revamping our current promotional break structure. There is a surprising but not-so-subtle difference in how many "loud" and "soft" promos one can digest in 5-7 minutes.
I watched some well-deserving colleagues earn promotions and I continue to be amazed by the creative genius that comes from these hallways. (Congrats Lisa, Eric, Alice and Aly!)

I look forward to another fantastic year at HBO and wish everyone a very merry 2012!

Last night, the Boardwalk Empire promo team joined the cast and crew of the show for an exclusive premiere party at the fabulous Waldorf Astoria. With the Emmy awards approaching this Sunday and the season premiere just a short week later, the ballroom was filled with excitement. We enjoyed dinner and drinks amidst 1920s vintage-inspired decor and showgirl servers. The live band was playing period hits as guests gambled their souvenir chips at the black jack and roulette tables. Everyone is gearing up for another action-packed season where the Atlantic City stakes are only getting higher. Are you?

Yesterday evening, the Mildred Pierce promotional team joined the cast and crew for their red carpet moment and a Ziegfeld screening of parts 1 and 2 of the miniseries. We had amazing seats next to recent Academy Award winner, Melissa Leo, and the very dapper Guy Pearce. Afterward, we celebrated at The Plaza with delicious dinner and drinks. And let's not forget Mildred's world-famous pie served up as dessert.

Kate Winslet looked stunning, making the style section of every magazine on the newsstands. Meet the Mildred promo team and Buzz crew below. We didn't get published but we did receive lots of hugs and congrats from our friends at HBO.

Showman Of The Year

It's an annual tradition that Variety selects a Showman of the Year. But this year, it's not a celebrity, studio, director or producer. It's a company. Our company. HBO.

2010 was a very big year in these hallways. We pushed out critically acclaimed new series, Boardwalk Empire, and the highly anticipated miniseries, The Pacific. We brought back returning seasons of our biggest hit, True Blood, and fan favorites: Hung, Bored To Death and Eastbound & Down. We won Emmys for the brilliant Temple Grandin and You Don't Know Jack. In short, we were busy!

What I loved best was the actual cover of Variety. Instead of choosing show clips or pasting our executives' mugs on newsstands, they chose all of us. That's every HBO employee on the cover, taking a little bow and small pat on the back. Congrats!

HBO's Newest Miniseries

HBO tackled the epic WWII story, The Pacific, last spring. And now it's ready for something completely different.

Mildred Pierce is our newest miniseries event, set to debut in the spring of 2011. While you may remember Joan Crawford's 1945 Academy Award win for starring in a film by the same name, this is not that. HBO's version is based on the novel written by James M. Cain and is the story of a proud single mother struggling to earn her daughter’s love during the Great Depression in middle-class Los Angeles.

The five-part miniseries is directed by Academy Award Nominee, Todd Haynes, and the title role will be played by Academy Award winner and one of my very favorite actresses, Kate Winslet. The series also stars Guy Pearce (The Hurt Locker, Memento), Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler, True Blood) and Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Treme).

It's another exciting day in the hallways of HBO as CTAM has just announced their annual Mark award winners. And the Big Love season 4 campaign takes home silver!

CTAM is the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing and it is no secret that their Mark award entry process is the toughest submission all year. They not only require a situation analysis, strategy and tactics essay... They want to see results. Literally.

Fortunately for our team and for one of my favorite series, Big Love boasted a 49% increased viewership for their season 4 premiere, attracting 1.7 million viewers. They say the proof is in the pudding. Our proof is in the promos.

It's true. HBO has found its latest and greatest project set along the shores of New Jersey but rest assured, it isn't reality television. And I can guarantee there won't be a single glimpse of Snookie's poof or The Situation's abs. But it will be highly entertaining.

Boardwalk Empire is HBO's new dramatic series set in Atlantic City during the dawn of prohibition. The show was created and written by Emmy Award-winning writer of The Sopranos, Terence Winter. The pilot was directed by the Academy Award-winning legend, Martin Scorsese. And the series stars Steve Buscemi (The Sopranos), Michael Pitt (Finding Forrester) and Michael Williams (The Wire) - among others. Have you set your DVR yet?

Boardwalk Empire tells an incredibly thrilling story about the passage of the 18th Amendment and the birth of the American gangster - two pieces of 1920s history that are undoubtedly related. Alcohol is smuggled from Atlantic City to New York and Chicago as infamous gangsters, Al Capone, Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, crawl on screen much before their well-known prime.

Don't Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch

The Hung team is in the midst of a 3 day shoot and 12 hour days with an extremely worn down cast (read: high maintenance). As we sit at dinner recapping our Character ID shoot and wondering how tomorrow could possibly be more challenging, it hits me... literally. Food poisoning.

Without divulging the dry heaving details, I can only say that I wouldn't wish food poisoning on my worst enemy. And definitely not upon our Director and Production Coordinator who also came down with a bad case of craft services chicken.

After way too many knowing glances, cracker lunches and races to the bathroom, I looked at our Director and said: "This is going to be one of those moments, when it's all over, that we look back at and find really funny. Hilarious, even."

We did. But not until Friday!

Bye Bye Beach Boys

When I started working in promotions, my parents frequently asked when my name would appear in the credits. Very rarely. And as we conclude the Big Love season 4 launch campaign, my answer is no different.

But... This time around we made the credits. No, no, not the white-on-black scrolling text end credits. We created the opening credits = We produced the title sequence = We made the show open!

The Big Love Creators/Executive Producers loved our "falling" launch campaign so much so that they felt the entire series could benefit from a face lift. And they asked us to conduct the surgery. Long gone are the days of skating to the Beach Boys atop thin ice. Bill and his three wives are now found free falling at the beginning of each Big Love episode.

It was a very exciting and unprecedented venture for HBO's Creative Services department and we couldn't be more thrilled with the results!

Style Hunter Eyes on HBO

I admit, I'm a loyal Entertainment Weekly subscriber and am therefore familiar with the Style Hunter section in every issue. But let me get you up to speed in case you're not. Style Hunter is authored by some beloved reporter who locates the designer and price tag of the seriously great fashion on all of your favorite TV shows and movies. (I once owned the very necklace adorning Addison Shepherd's neck as she rocked the neonatal unit of Grey's Anatomy.) I digress.

Recently, I was surprised to read that Style Hunter was searching for info from one of our very own: Ginnifer Goodwin's fabulous dress in recent HBO promos. (Read: the dress we had custom sketched, designed and tailored for our Big Love promo shoot in October!) Sorry, EW fans, this one isn't for sale.

As the promo for Big Love says, the new season premieres this Sunday (9 p.m., HBO) and as my colleague Ken Tucker says, it’s a secret- and drama-filled season.
Plot points aside, one of the sartorial secrets many of you have been dying to find out is who makes Ginnifer Goodwin’s white dress in the promos.
I now have an answer, but it might not be one you like; the dress was custom-made by BL’s costume department. Sure, it’s sad that we all can’t pick up the light-as-air number for ourselves, but I must say, I’m pretty impressed with the costume designers. It looks straight off the Bloomingdale’s racks!

Behind The Scenes

After successfully insuring the set was built, the stage was lit and the harnesses could fly, my work was only half done. I then drove my rental sedan and 2nd set of mapquest directions across town to Pasadena where Big Love productions was in the midst of shooting on location for the 5th episode of their new season. I sifted through the 150 extras to locate the show's wonderfully helpful AP, Blair, who introduced me around the cast and crew. I got my camera crew set-up for our upcoming 8 hour behind-the-scenes shoot then settled in with my blackberry and craft services.

From the inside, I can report that Bill Paxton is down to earth and as appropriately political as his character. Jeanne Tripplehorn is all business and the best actress on that set. Ginny Goodwin is as sweet as her Tennessee accent. And underneath all those Juniper Creek clothes, Chloe Sevigny has some super hot legs.

Amped by the glorious weather, breakfast at the pool and an afternoon filled with all things Big Love, today we begin the prelight.

My fellow producer, Eric, and I drove onto Universal's lot, parked by the Desperate Housewives studios and exited the rental car as a tram filled with eager tourists zoomed by snapping our picture. Boy, will they be disappointed when the black-clad brigade from New York turns out to be a couple of nobodies all over their digital cameras!

Waiting for the set to get built was about as entertaining as watching paint dry. But as soon as the stunt men arrived ready to test their rig, everyone perked up. Big time.

My departmental charity endeavor went off without a hitch last Monday. We partnered with an amazing organization, Free Arts NYC, to sponsor and mentor a day of their Multicultural Summer Camp for children from The Department of Homeless Services. I recruited 18 fellow coworkers and schmoozed our corporate office into writing the big sponsorship check. It was a huge success thanks to my dedicated colleagues and the generosity of our company.

KUDOS TO CREATIVE SERVICES!

Last Monday, HBO employees from Creative Services participated in a group volunteer effort in partnership with Free Arts NYC's multicultural summer camp.

Free Arts NYC provides underserved children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.

Our staff joined 25 children from the Department of Homeless Services for a full day of workshops and mentoring at Alvin Ailey Studios. The privately-instructed African dance class was a highlight for the entire group!

Work In Progress

At the start of 2009, I volunteered to serve on my department's newly formed Work-Life Task Force, a panel of three Producers and one Vice President charged with improving the working life of my 150 or so coworkers. After several meetings and more than a few ideas, we pitched our suggestions at the following month's staff meeting.

The results:

Functioning locks on the stalls of the women's restroom = Applause. Great! Now we have their attention.
Birthday calendar in the kitchen = Bomb. I realize the days of Susie Sorority are over. Try again.
Birthday gift card to Crumbs cupcake and coffee shop = Still Bombs. Wait? New Yorkers live on coffee. It's a food group. But birthdays make coworkers bitter. Do not acknowledge age, wrinkles or hair loss. Move on.
Software updates on assignment grids = Indifference. Not everyone finds the value in organization, color coding and automatic notifiers. Their loss.
Research & Development Fund for outside endeavors = Blank Stares. I know it's a recession but throw me a bone. It could happen.
Group volunteer project in the community = Enthusiasm. Really?! Really? I am pleasantly shocked. Improve our working life by improving the lives of others. I'm all over it.

Thus begins my journey to find a group volunteer project in the New York City area that costs little, pays forward a lot and doesn't conflict with weekends, shoot schedules or political & social affiliations. Stay tuned!

And The Winner Is...

The 2009 Promax BDA winners were announced yesterday evening and I am happy to boast a bronze victory for Off The Record: Ringo Starr in the Comedy Program Spot (Single) category. I'm also basking in Big Love success as our season 3 campaign team took home a silver statue for Dramatic Program Spot (Multiple).

For those unfamiliar with Promax, it's the equivalent of the Oscars or Emmy Awards for promotional and marketing professionals working in broadcast media. The week kicks off with a conference by day - filled with sessions, panels, screenings and exhibits in the latest and greatest technological trends. Last year, I was schooled in the value of LinkedIn. And by night, Manhattan's social scene is filled with a plethora of cocktail parties hosted by voiceover talent agencies, graphic houses and production music libraries. Promax week concludes with a few noteworthy speakers, Robert Redford and Bob Saget, and an awards ceremony celebrating the Best Of in a wide range of categories.

While we are halfway to 2010 and working hard to create next year's award winning promotions, it's great to be recognized and even more fun to celebrate all week long!

My Acting Debut

With True Blood's highly anticipated season 2 premiere just around the corner, our department has called all hands on deck. That's right, dear readers! My long, pale neck gets to star in the bright lights once more. Only this time, I've moved up in the world. So long print campaigns, I'm video worthy now.

After an hour in the makeup chair becoming "dead", I was placed inside a stalled vehicle in the middle of the woods and told to (what else?) act dead. That whole not laughing or breathing direction while people shriek in horror and shine lights in your face is much more difficult than anticipated. Especially when fake blood is dripping down your neck, your deceased on-camera boyfriend is cracking jokes and mosquitos are the opposite of deterred by the seven layers of Off on your ankles.

But it was a learning experience, a fun one! And I think my fang marks are pretty beautiful, in a morbid sort of way. Check out the video.

Coming In 2010

The creators of Band Of Brothers, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, are at it again. Same war, new venue: The Pacific. This skilled production team is busy editing a 10-part miniseries based on World War II combat in the Pacific and it is bound to be epic. I'm screening through the hundreds of behind-the-scenes shoot tapes to create historical and making of pieces for the BluRay DVD, to be simultaneously released with the premiere in 2010.

But here lies the real story, within two books published by surviving Marines - enlisted men, Privates, 18-year-old boys. Each is a raw and terrifying account of the journey through boot camp, combat and the aftermath of WWII. The Pacific and its characters are based largely on these texts. This is what I'm reading.

After wrapping the core campaign for Big Love's third season, I've spent the past four weeks creating one final piece of promotion: a 12-minute season recap to air at this year's Paley Festival in Los Angeles.

I'm not sure whether it was my excitement at cutting long-form product (yes, 12 minutes is long-form in the promo world) or my want to payback dream clients, Mark Olsen & Will Scheffer, for the quickest approval process our department has ever seen... But my editor and I got down to business. And cranked out one hell of a spot, if I do say so myself.

I'll spare you the buffering but check the review below!

"After a gorgeous clip package that encapsulated all of the serpentine story threads from Season Three of Big Love into one breathtaking montage that displayed the depth and breadth of the plotting this past season, the cast took the stage along with moderator Mary McNamara of The Los Angeles Times, whose enthusiasm for the event and the series matched our own in the audience."

True Life: I'm a Neck Model

One of my favorite coworkers approached me several weeks ago - informing me that I have a long neck and pale skin. But before the insult thoroughly soaked in, he explained that he was casting a neck model for the cover of Fangbanger Magazine: a portion of his vampire documentary to coincide with the premiere of HBO's new series, True Blood.

Over the past four months, I've spent Wednesday evenings in Central Park playing a not-so-serious game of pitch and catch. I'm a proud member of the HBO intramural softball team and while we didn't pick up the most wins throughout the season, we definitely had the most fun.

By some act of God, we made it into the the playoffs, greased up our gloves and finished the season as champions of the entire league. Who did we beat in the final game, you ask? The Sports Department.

I hail from the Midwest and am a Gator graduate from the University of Florida. But my southern accent faded. I spend too much money on rent and too much time at work, all to live in the greatest city in the world. I am a New Yorker.

I am a Writer/Producer in the Original Programming & Brand Image group of HBO's Creative Services department. I write, produce and edit promotional content for all of HBO's award-winning programming, including Series, Miniseries, Films, Documentaries and Sports. Basically, I watch and market TV for a living - it's a dream.
